What cloud computing is (and why it changes planning)

Cloud computing is the delivery of computing services over the internet. These services include traditional IT infrastructure—virtual machines, storage, databases, and networking—and also extend to newer offerings such as IoT, machine learning (ML), and AI. Because services are delivered over the internet, cloud computing is not constrained by physical infrastructure in the same way as a traditional datacenter, enabling rapid expansion of IT capacity without waiting to build new facilities.

Practical example: a retail team anticipating seasonal traffic can deploy extra compute capacity in the cloud for the launch period and scale down afterward. At a fundamentals level, this shifts planning from long procurement cycles to on-demand provisioning, helping teams test faster, recover faster, and adapt capacity as requirements change. Cloud platforms can also provide global reach, allowing services to be placed closer to users and designed for regional resilience without building multiple physical datacenters.

3. Which statement best defines cloud computing?
  • A method of purchasing physical servers for a private datacenter
  • The delivery of computing services over the internet
  • A networking protocol used to connect on-premises servers
  • A single service that provides only AI capabilities
Show answer and explanation
  • The delivery of computing services over the internet

Cloud computing is defined as delivering computing services over the internet, including infrastructure like VMs, storage, databases, and networking, plus services like IoT, ML, and AI.

4. A key reason cloud computing can scale faster than a traditional datacenter is that cloud services are delivered over the internet and therefore are less constrained by physical infrastructure. What is the most direct implication of this?
  • Teams must always buy hardware months in advance to handle peak demand
  • Teams can rapidly expand capacity without building a new datacenter
  • Teams lose the ability to reduce capacity after a peak period ends
  • Teams must collocate staff in the provider’s datacenter to provision resources
Show answer and explanation

Shared responsibility model: how duties shift in the cloud

In a traditional on-premises datacenter, your organization is responsible for maintaining the physical space, security, and the servers themselves, and the IT department maintains the infrastructure and software needed to keep the datacenter running (including patching and versioning). In cloud computing, responsibilities are shared between the cloud provider and the consumer. The provider takes responsibility for physical security, power, cooling, and network connectivity, while the consumer remains responsible for the data and information stored in the cloud and for access security (granting access only to those who need it).

Some responsibilities depend on the service model and how you deploy a solution. For example, if you use a cloud SQL database service, the provider maintains the database platform, but you are still responsible for the data you ingest. If you deploy a virtual machine and install an SQL database on it, you are responsible for database patches and updates as well as the data. The shared responsibility model is closely tied to cloud service types: infrastructure as a service (IaaS) places more responsibility on the consumer; software as a service (SaaS) places more on the provider; and platform as a service (PaaS) sits between them.

Diagram: On-Premises, Data to hosts: customer, IaaS, Data to OS: customer, Infra to hosts: provider, PaaS, Data, devices, accounts, Identity to network: shared, OS to hosts: provider, SaaS, Identity and access: shared, Apps to hosts: provider

  • Consumer is always responsible for: information and data stored in the cloud; devices allowed to connect (phones, computers, etc.); and accounts/identities of people, services, and devices in the environment.

  • Provider is always responsible for: the physical datacenter, physical network, and physical hosts.

  • Depends on service type: operating systems, network controls, applications, identity and access, and infrastructure.

Example of shared duties: in PaaS and SaaS, identity and access is shared—you manage users, roles, and policies, while the provider runs the authentication platform (such as Microsoft Entra ID). Infrastructure shifts entirely to the provider once you move from on-premises to IaaS.

7. Match each responsibility to who is responsible for it in a cloud provider scenario (provider vs. consumer).
  • Physical security, power, cooling, and network connectivity
  • Information and data stored in the cloud
  • Devices allowed to connect (for example, phones and computers)
  • Physical datacenter, physical network, and physical hosts
  • Cloud provider
  • Consumer
Show answer and explanation
  • Physical security, power, cooling, and network connectivity: Cloud provider
  • Information and data stored in the cloud: Consumer
  • Devices allowed to connect (for example, phones and computers): Consumer
  • Physical datacenter, physical network, and physical hosts: Cloud provider

These physical and facility-level responsibilities belong to the provider.

The consumer remains responsible for their data.

The consumer controls which devices are allowed to connect.

These are always owned and operated by the provider.

8. A team uses a managed cloud SQL database service (not a self-managed database on a VM). Which responsibility remains with the customer?
  • Maintaining the actual database platform
  • Patching and updating the database engine
  • The data that gets ingested into the database
  • Power and cooling for the datacenter
Show answer and explanation
  • The data that gets ingested into the database

When using a cloud SQL database service, the provider maintains the database, but the customer is still responsible for the data ingested into the database.

9. A team deploys a virtual machine and installs an SQL database on it. Compared with using a managed cloud SQL database service, what additional responsibility does the team take on?
  • Physical network connectivity in the datacenter
  • Database patches and updates
  • Physical host maintenance
  • Provider-run authentication platform operation
Show answer and explanation
  • Database patches and updates

If you install SQL on a VM, you are responsible for database patches and updates (in addition to maintaining your data).

10. Order the service models by how much responsibility typically falls on the consumer (from most to least).
  • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
  • Platform as a Service (PaaS)
  • Software as a Service (SaaS)
Show answer
  1. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
  2. Platform as a Service (PaaS)
  3. Software as a Service (SaaS)

Cloud deployment models: private, public, hybrid, and multicloud

Cloud models describe the deployment type of cloud resources. The three main models are private, public, and hybrid. A fourth increasingly common scenario is multicloud (using multiple public cloud providers).

Diagram: Private Cloud, Dedicated org, full control, isolated data, Managed by you, single organization, Public Cloud, Provider infrastructure, pay-as-you-go scaling, Managed by provider, public access, Hybrid Cloud, Both connected, most flexible, surge, Managed jointly, private plus public, Multicloud, Multiple providers, varied features, Managed by you, two or more providers

Private cloud

A private cloud is a cloud environment used by a single entity. It evolved from the traditional datacenter model by delivering IT services over the internet while keeping resources dedicated to one organization. It provides greater control for the IT team, but typically comes with greater cost and fewer public-cloud benefits. A private cloud may be hosted in an on-site datacenter or in a dedicated offsite datacenter, potentially run by a third party.

Public cloud

A public cloud is built, controlled, and maintained by a third-party cloud provider. Anyone who wants to purchase cloud services can access and use resources; this general public availability is a key difference from private cloud.

Hybrid cloud

A hybrid cloud uses both public and private clouds in an interconnected environment. One use case is “surging,” where a private cloud temporarily deploys public cloud resources to meet increased demand. Hybrid cloud can also add security flexibility by letting organizations choose which services remain in public cloud and which run on private infrastructure.

Model

Key comparative aspects

Public cloud

No capital expenditures to scale up; applications can be quickly provisioned and deprovisioned; you pay only for what you use; you don’t have complete control over resources and security.

Private cloud

Complete control over resources and security; data isn’t collocated with other tenants’ data; hardware must be purchased for startup and maintenance; you are responsible for hardware maintenance and updates; you control security, compliance, or legal requirements.

Hybrid cloud

Most flexibility; you determine where to run your applications.

Multicloud and Azure management/migration options

In a multicloud scenario, you use two or more public cloud providers—often to use different features across providers or while migrating from one provider to another. This requires managing resources and security across multiple providers. Azure Arc is a set of technologies that helps manage environments across Azure-only public cloud, private cloud, hybrid configurations, and multicloud. If you have VMware-based private cloud workloads and want to move to public or hybrid cloud, Azure VMware Solution lets you run VMware workloads in Azure with integration and scalability.

11. Which cloud deployment model is defined as an environment used by a single entity with resources dedicated to one organization?
  • Public cloud
  • Private cloud
  • Hybrid cloud
  • Multicloud
Show answer and explanation
  • Private cloud

A private cloud is used by a single entity and keeps resources dedicated to one organization.

12. What is a key distinguishing characteristic of a public cloud compared with a private cloud?
  • Resources are dedicated to a single organization
  • Anyone can purchase and use the cloud resources
  • It must be hosted in the customer’s on-site datacenter
  • It eliminates the need for identity and access management
Show answer and explanation
  • Anyone can purchase and use the cloud resources

Public cloud resources are generally available to anyone who wants to purchase cloud services; this public availability distinguishes it from private cloud.

13. A hybrid cloud is an interconnected environment using both private and public clouds. Which scenario best illustrates a hybrid cloud “surge” use case?
  • Running all workloads only in a single public cloud provider
  • Keeping all services on-premises to maximize control
  • Temporarily deploying public cloud resources to handle increased demand beyond private capacity
  • Using two public cloud providers to compare pricing
Show answer and explanation
  • Temporarily deploying public cloud resources to handle increased demand beyond private capacity

Hybrid cloud can allow a private cloud to surge for temporary demand by deploying public cloud resources.

14. In a multicloud scenario, an organization uses multiple public cloud providers and must manage resources and security across those providers.
  • True
  • False
Show answer and explanation
  • True

Multicloud is defined as using two (or more) public cloud providers and managing resources and security in both environments.

15. Match the Azure offering to the scenario it addresses.

  • Running existing VMware workloads in Azure with integration and scalability: Azure VMware Solution

Azure Arc helps manage cloud environments across these configurations.

Azure VMware Solution supports VMware workload migration and operation in Azure.

Consumption-based model and cloud pricing

Cloud computing uses a consumption-based model: you pay for the IT resources you use and nothing more. Instead of buying and maintaining datacenter infrastructure, you rent compute and storage and release resources when you’re done. This aligns with operational expenditure (OpEx)—ongoing spending on services over time—rather than capital expenditure (CapEx), which is up-front spending on physical infrastructure such as servers, network hardware, and datacenter space.

  • No upfront costs for hardware or datacenter infrastructure.

  • No need to purchase and manage capacity that may go underutilized.

  • Ability to add resources when demand increases.

  • Ability to release resources when demand decreases.

Diagram: Trad Q1

Capacity planning differs sharply between traditional datacenters and cloud. In a traditional datacenter, you estimate future needs: overestimating wastes money on idle infrastructure, while underestimating degrades performance and requires ordering and provisioning more hardware (plus power and cooling). In the cloud, you adjust resources to match actual demand—for example, add virtual machines during peaks and remove them when demand drops—paying for used capacity rather than idle capacity.

Cloud providers typically use pay-as-you-go pricing. Paying only for consumed services helps plan and manage operating costs, run infrastructure more efficiently, and scale as workload needs change. The provider maintains underlying infrastructure (power, cooling, hardware, networking), allowing teams to focus on business problems and delivering new capabilities.

16. In a consumption-based cloud model, what is the most accurate description of how costs relate to resource usage?
  • You pay a fixed cost regardless of whether resources are used
  • You pay for the resources you consume and can stop paying by releasing them
  • You must purchase maximum capacity up front to avoid outages
  • You pay only for physical servers you personally maintain
Show answer and explanation
  • You pay for the resources you consume and can stop paying by releasing them

The consumption-based model means you pay for the IT resources you use and can release them when done, rather than paying for idle capacity.

17. Match each budgeting term to its meaning.
  • Up-front spending on physical infrastructure such as servers, network hardware, and datacenter space
  • Ongoing spending on services over time
  • CapEx
  • OpEx
Show answer and explanation
  • Up-front spending on physical infrastructure such as servers, network hardware, and datacenter space: CapEx
  • Ongoing spending on services over time: OpEx

Capital expenditure (CapEx) is up-front investment in physical infrastructure.

Operational expenditure (OpEx) is ongoing service spending.

18. Because cloud services are paid for as they are consumed, cloud computing is typically classified as an operational expense (OpEx).
  • True
  • False
Show answer and explanation
  • True

The source explicitly states that paying for cloud services as you consume them classifies cloud computing as OpEx.

19. A team running an on-premises datacenter underestimates future demand, and performance degrades. According to the traditional capacity planning model, what typically must happen to fix the shortfall?
  • Order, install, and provision additional hardware (plus power and cooling)
  • Instantly add capacity without any procurement or installation
  • Release unused resources to reduce cost
  • Shift physical security responsibilities to a cloud provider
Show answer and explanation
  • Order, install, and provision additional hardware (plus power and cooling)

In a traditional datacenter, fixing underestimation requires ordering, installing, and provisioning additional hardware, power, and cooling.

20. Order the cloud scaling actions for handling a demand spike using virtual machines.
  • Add virtual machines when more capacity is needed
  • Remove virtual machines when demand drops (scale back in)
  • Scale out during peak demand
Show answer
  1. Add virtual machines when more capacity is needed
  2. Scale out during peak demand
  3. Remove virtual machines when demand drops (scale back in)

Extra questions

21. In which cloud styles can you install physical servers?
  • private cloud and hybrid cloud only
  • private cloud only
  • private cloud, hybrid cloud and public cloud
  • hybrid cloud only
Show answer and explanation
  • private cloud and hybrid cloud only

Own physical machines can only live where you control the building, namely a private cloud and the on-premises side of hybrid. Public cloud hardware belongs entirely to the provider, so customers cannot install their own servers there.

Fifty virtual machines run on premises and fifty run in Azure, with links between the two fleets.

22. Which cloud style does this arrangement represent?
  • hybrid
  • private
  • public
Show answer and explanation
  • hybrid

Interconnected on-premises and Azure estates spanning private and public resources form hybrid cloud. Either side alone would be solely private or solely public.

Several servers will leave an on-premises network for Azure.

23. What strength does a public cloud service offer over keeping the servers on premises?
  • The public cloud is owned by the general public rather than a private business
  • The public cloud is a crowd-sourced effort that lets firms improve the cloud
  • Every public cloud asset is openly reachable by any member of the public
  • The public cloud is a shared estate where many firms each consume a slice of the capacity
Show answer and explanation
  • The public cloud is a shared estate where many firms each consume a slice of the capacity

A public cloud is a multitenant estate owned by the provider where many organizations each consume a slice, gaining scale without hardware ownership. It is not owned by the general public, is not crowd-sourced, and customer data is not openly reachable.

Each cloud style must be tied to the strength it best provides.

24. Link each cloud style to its correct strength.
  • Operates without any upfront hardware purchase
  • Keeps full direction over protection
  • Allows placement on local resources or cloud resources at will
  • Hybrid Cloud
  • Private Cloud
  • Public Cloud
Show answer and explanation
  • Operates without any upfront hardware purchase: Public Cloud
  • Keeps full direction over protection: Private Cloud
  • Allows placement on local resources or cloud resources at will: Hybrid Cloud

Renting shared capacity avoids upfront buying.

Single-tenant ownership allows strict security direction.

Splitting estates lets each workload sit where it fits best.

25. Which two traits describe the public cloud?
  • dedicated hardware
  • unsecured connections
  • limited storage
  • metered pricing
  • self-service management
Show answer and explanation
  • metered pricing
  • self-service management

Public cloud billing is metered, so consumption decides cost, and customers self-provision through portal, command-line or APIs. Hardware is shared across tenants rather than dedicated, links can be protected, and available storage appears effectively boundless.

26. In which cloud style does a third party own the hardware pooled among many tenants?
  • private
  • hybrid
  • public
Show answer and explanation
  • public

In public cloud a third-party provider builds, owns and looks after hardware shared by many tenants. Private cloud is devoted to one organization, and hybrid mixes the two, so only public fits the description.

27. An organization hosting its infrastructure ____ eliminates the need to maintain its own data center.
